Making Salt Dough Ornaments
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup table salt
- 1 ½ cups warm water
Tools
- Rolling Pin
- Embossed Rolling Pin
- Cookie Cutters
- Paint, Glitter, Ribbon
- Polyurethane Spray to preserve
Instructions
Combine your flour and salt in a large bowl. Slowly add the
warm water, mixing together, until it becomes too hard to stir. Then use
your hands to knead the dough. Knead until soft, like the consistency of playdough.
Using a regular rolling pin, roll out half of the dough to approximately
1/8” thick. To create the embossed design, I used an embossed rolling pin,
which you can find anywhere online. Simply roll the dough with the embossed pin. Use
cookie cutters to cut your desired shape. I used scalloped edge hearts and
circles. Use a straw end to create a hole for ribbon or twine.
Transfer to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Bake at 300 degrees for 1 hour. Once cooled, you can paint
them or leave them natural for a primitive look. Finish with a fine coating of Polyurethane
Spray to preserve.
You can find the Measuring Cup and the Olive Wood Rolling Pin at Farmhouse Wares. (The cookie cutters and embossed rolling pin are not from the shop, but can be found online.)
