Front Door Lanterns

Using an old lantern for front door lighting adds a lot of character. This home in Old Deerfield even has an old lantern shelf, which is an unusual touch. Could be a maintenance nightmare, but I love the look.

Place Card Vases

I used our Vintage Style White Ware Vases as place cards for a recent dinner party. They were a huge hit. I put a special quotation on the back of each one. You can whip the labels up on the computer and tie them on with bakers twine. Super simple.

Vintage Style Enamel Storage Containers

Fall and Flies

Even though fall is here, we're still enjoying the tastes of summer with this freshly harvested watermelon from our garden. The screen food cover sure comes in handy this time of year. The flies keep sneaking into my kitchen. I'm sure this old farmhouse offers a million easy entries for the little buggers.

Chalkboard Dining Table

I'm so not over the chalkboard craze. When I saw this chalkboard table in Suzanne Flohr's home in the current issue of Better Homes and Gardens, I knew I had a new weekend project on my hands. I think our Vintage Industrial Hardware Bin will look so cute on top of this table with different colors of chalk in each bin.

Golden Girl

Our Golden Retriever is eight-months-old today. You see the baby blanket she is carrying? We brought her home in that blankie. The breeder had covered it with her mom's scent. Now it pretty much just smells icky. But I can't bring myself to wash it. Every day Bodie pulls it out of her crate and walks around the house with it until we rub her belly. Happy Birthday Bodie.

Chard Lovin'

We fell in love with chard a few years ago when hubby threw some seeds
in a shady part of the garden and it ended up being the season's best
crop. The fact that it is ranked as one of the world's healthiest
foods is a great added benefit, but really, since it's easy to grow
and fun to cook with, we'd probably still use it if it had the
nutritional value of a Twinkie. The plant grows happily in partial
shade, producing tasty tender leaves pretty much from June until
September or even October. And it looks beautiful. Hubby is
particularly smitten with this year's variety, called Bright Lights,
described in his seed catalog thusly: "Lightly savoyed, green or
bronze leaves with stems of many colors including gold, pink, orange,
purple, red, and white with bright and pastel variations. The flavor
is milder than ordinary chard, with each color a bit different."

Here is a favorite but simple recipe. Made with Bright Lights chard,
it will please the eye as much as the palate.

Swiss Chard with Garlic and Pasta

Ingredients:
One bunch fresh chard, (approx 1 1/2 pounds)
3 cloves fresh garlic
1/2 yellow onion
1 cup chicken stock
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
1/2 lb. pasta (I prefer thin spaghetti, but any yummy noodle will do.)
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper

Preparation:
Wash chard. Cut stems in 1 inch pieces. Cut leaves and ribs into
2-inch strips. Chop onions and garlic coarsely.

Cook pasta according to directions, toss with about half the olive
oil. Set aside.

In a deep skillet or wok, heat the other half of the oil, add garlic
and onions, cover and cook five minutes on medium heat until onions
begin to soften. Add chard stems and cook a few more minutes. Add
chicken stock and chard leaves and greens, salt and pepper. Cook about
8-10 minutes until chard is tender.

Add pasta, mix thoroughly. You can add Parmesan cheese while the meal
is still in the skillet, blending it in as best you can, or use it as
a topping at table.

Tom's tip: The secret to cooking chard and other greens (beets and
kale in particular) is accommodating the fact that the stems are
thicker and slower cooking than the leaves. When using chard in a
pasta dish or soup, add the thicker, tougher parts of the plant a few
minutes before you add the tender parts of the plant. Everything
should come out cooked to perfection.

Back to School Bake Sale

We had a bake sale last Sunday to raise funds for my daughter's school soccer team. I fretted over what to make, as I didn't exactly have a ton of time on my hands.  I ended up making two treats and both were so easy, quick and yummy. First I made Chocolate Toffee Saltine Cracker Bars (pictured top and lower right), and altered the recipe by sprinkling them with Heath Bar Crunch. These are a winner for anyone that loves the sweet and salty combo. Then I made the Fudgy Saucepan Brownies that were suggested by a Farmhouse Wares Facebook Fan. Pure Chocolate Heaven! Make sure you have a glass of cold milk ready with these. The sale was a success and we exceeded our goal. The little enamelware food storage container was a big hit, too. Happy Summer

Happy Summer! I thought this older post was perfect for today. It's called "A Sound Sound":

Recently, I took my daughter to the park. It was late in the afternoon and my iced coffee wasn't doing the trick, so I had that letha...rgic, can-I-really-be-this-tired-or-do-I-have Lyme-disease feeling. I let her go run and play, while I sat on a bench and closed my eyes. The air was perfect with a friendly breeze. I could hear the kids playing. It reminded me of days when I would be drifting off to sleep on the beach. The sound of waves and kids building sand castles lulled me into a dreamy state. Then a woman walked by my park bench. I cracked an eye open to acknowledge her. She said, "Don't you wish they had adult playgrounds right next to this, so we could work-out while they play?" I laughed and said that would be great. But I lied, because I was quite content doing nothing and having nothing to do so I could just listen to sound of kids playing.

What's Cropping Up in Your Garden

We're finally getting most of our planting done. My vintage trolley cart helps me transport things around in style. We always have to make adjustments to our crops as we learn. More onions and garlic this year, as ours only brought us through January last winter. We try to live on our garden for as long as we can. What's your favorite garden crop?
